Wellness Wednesday

Last month I blogged about the dangers of BPA (and other) plastics.  Today I found an article about avoiding BPA and it listed sources of BPA that I was unaware of.  Common products that may contain BPA include:

  1. Receipts
  2. Canned food
  3. Food storage containers and bags
  4. Dental sealants
  5. Alcoholic beverages
  6. Infant formula
  7. Plastic utensils
  8. Soda cans
  9. Paper currency
Do any of these surprise you?

Of course, some of these items are unavoidable (how can we make transactions without money or receipts?).  However, several of the products listed can be avoided through careful planning and general awareness.  For more information, you can find the article here.  Ecogrrl has pointed out that not all of the products listed contain BPA and that readers should research individual products to get the full story.

Good article. One quick "however", though, is that there are a few overarching statements in the article that can lead the reader to think that ALL of these items have BPA in them, which is inaccurate. For example, there are certain makers who do canned food in BPA-free cans (Eden for example), and not all types of alcohol, including wine & beer as the article refers to, is fermented in the same types of vats, and not all vats are BPA-lined. We have to continue to educate ourselves, but I'm worried this article's lack of details might create assumptions that are inaccurate.
