Results of Fall Editing

Once I decided to edit some of my kitchen, I couldn't wait for the weekend.  I went into a whirlwind of activity and severely edited my spice cabinet, my refrigertor freezer, and my pantry.  Out went herbs and spices that were past their use by date; out went appliances that were purchased with good intentions but never used (I'm not yet done with this task); and out went things that didn't belong in the first place; and out went long-forgotten frozen items.  I can now actually see everything in my kitchen.  My spices are neatly arranged in two rows that are easily accessible - the most used in the front, the occasionally used in back.  I even moved some items out of the upper shelves and was able to organize my canned goods in a way that made more sense.  I've grouped all my dried foods together in the pantry - pastas, noodles, rices, beans, etc. - and consolidated a few duplicates.   My next step in the kitchen will be to begin using up those items that have been around a while and I keep forgetting to use.

While I was on this mission, I also tackled some of my reading.  I have a habit (good or bad, I'm not sure) of having several books and magazines going at once.  Every now and then the clutter gets to me and I make an effort to finish up several items I've started.  I worked on this a bit today, finishing one of the best books I've read in a long time.  (That's another blog post waiting to happen.)  Now I'm down to my school books, a daily devotional, and the next novel that I'm going to read.  Yes, more room to breathe.

The kitchen is on my to-do list, too. But it scares me a little. The nice thing about my kitchen is that it is big with lots of cupboards. The bad thing is that it is big with lots of cupboards. ;) I need to just break it down into one cupboard at a time.

Deanna, I always plan to just do one cupboard, but before I know it, I have everything out. I suppose that's why I put off doing even small projects like this. Well, back to editing...

We recently had a big change in our lives, it was a very good change, but it brought on a brief moment of needing to stretch every penny! Not being able to go to the grocery store we set forth a challenge to go 1 week making meals from those jars + freezer items we had not eaten yet. We actually did it + came up with some new super quick meals that we will work into the dinner rotation.

I'm now on phase 2 (or is it 3?) of kitchen editing which consists of getting rid of anything not in a set, like coffee mugs.

Shona, it always feels good to me to get rid of or use up the "stragglers" in my life, those forgotten food items or mismatched kitchen items. I also did that with my drinking glasses. I was tired of buying inexpensive sets, breaking one or two, and then not being able to find matching replacements. I finally bought some open stock glasses that are very sturdy but can be replaced if broken.

I don't know why things seem to get in such a mess in cupboards and drawers...but it is the most satisfying feeling to get them cleaned and straighted...even though we manage to put it off. Good for you for getting all this organized. I have too many books going at one time too.(-:

Cherie, you must feel so good after all this. I too have more than one book and magazine on the go at any one time. Have you ever seen anyone use bookmarkes in magazines? I do!

Cherie,

I did this a couple months ago, I couldn't stand the way everything was arranged, it just wasn't efficient. I even re-papered my shelves. And one day I was trying to find something in my junk drawer and couldn't stand it anymore and just randomly started to clean it out!

I am a magazine addict! When I am done with them the ones I don't keep I try to pass along to a friend, or recycle them. I wish I could get rid of all of them but I just can't seem to do it...

La Vie, I know why my cupboards and drawers end up a disaster sometimes. It's because I don't take the time to put things away neatly. I think that I'll come back to it but never do. I'm trying to break this habit.
