Holiday Waste

I found an interesting chart on The Everyday Minimalist.  Go here to see a larger version of it.  I tried and tried to get it to upload to fit my blog but each time it ended up as either too large or too small.

The chart talks about all the waste associated with the holiday season - waste in that we spend a lot of resources wrapping gifts that people often do not want that end up being given away or put into landfill.  One interesting fact is that half of the paper that Americans use goes into wrapping and decorating!

A lot to think about...and to reconsider.

I don't regularly read her site, so this one is news to me.

Surprisingly, the bins were not overflowing in my neighborhood. I have not ventured out too much, but I was pleased to see most of the lids could actually close.

Speaking of which... I'm creeping up on 5 months since I last dragged my bin to the curb. I'm shooting for 6 months this time. Previous record was 4.

We switched to LEDs on our tree last year and we've used the same artificial tree for 20 years. I cut down our Chrismas newsletter list this year and I think next year I'll ask if anyone would prefer to receive it via e-mail. I've also got Christmas fabric just waiting to be made into gift bags. Someday.;)

Shona, 5 months - that's quite an accomplishment! It's amazing how little garbage we generate when we're more conscious of it.

Deanna, I haven't looked into LEDs but we didn't even put up our tree this year so don't know if it would be work the switch for us as far as the tree is concerned. Maybe for other lights when our CFLs burn out.

Keep me on your Christmas email list. :)
