Breast Cancer Awareness Month

My friend Lisa at Retro Housewife Goes Green has an excellent post on her blog about the pinkwashing we see every October. She also shared this video, which talks about eliminating the causes of cancer rather than the illusive "cure." Please watch the video and then go to Lisa's blog for the full article

Thanks for the link and posting the video.

Two years ago last month my best friend's mom passed away due to a very long battle with breast cancer so this is personal.

They conveniently forgot to mention the biggest chemical toxin of all called birth control pills. Also missing is early sex and many sexual partners outside of marriage. And let's not forget abortion as a cause of breast cancer.

Great post/ link. If I am already buying an item + part of the money goes to charity, great (and items/ products I buy are well-researched + carefully chosen in order to support companies + products** that are doing + promoting good in the world...phew!) but I also angers me to see the pink bows...buy this 'green' product (which is generally more plastic crap being put into the world)...and on + on + on.

The Story of Cosmetics is a great video as well (I'm sure you've probably seen it, but I linked it anyway):

**As much as I love Dr. Bronners products + company, I was horrified that their SalSuds all-purpose cleaner contains Sodium Laureth Sulfate, a big carcinogen.

I am in total agreement with Adrienne...I have said for years that I believe there is a link between B.C. pills and breast cancer. I personally never took it because I was worried what could happen down the road. I told my daughter whatever you do, get off those things as soon as you can.

I also hardly use any chemicals in our yard, and am starting to think I need to change my cleaning products.

I brought up this post the other day with a client at my work who just completed chemo treatment for breast cancer. This was part of her justified rant about corporate prevention rather than pink ribbon cure, which does nothing. It started off with something to the effect of "wearing pink isn't going to cure cancer!..." and continued with her thoughts on soft plastics + on being called a "survivor" when she sees it more as a by-product of the way we live (there was a bit of profanity scattered in there). It really was a very interesting exchange. My mother went on a similar rant about my father's Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.

Lisa, I'm so sorry about your friend's mother. I lost a friend a couple of years ago. And it made me angry that she was considered a "successful cure" because she was cancer free at 5 years. It came back just as she passed that anniversary.

Adrienne, we do need to rethink a lot of what we're doing to our bodies and the long-term affects.

Shona, I didn't realize SLS was a carcinogen! I've read that it can irritate skin tissue but didn't know it could kill - thanks for letting me know.

Linda, you're doing the right thing. Although we cannot eliminate what others do, at least we can control the chemicals that we bring into our own lives.

Shona, I hope your client has a successful outcome with her treatments - and I'm glad that she has had her eyes opened to what is really going on. As a survivor she can have a big impact on others.

I also hope your father was/is a survivor. My grandmother battled lymphoma for over a decade.
