Catching Up

Lately I've gotten very behind in my virtual life.  With all the travel and projects, I've had to neglect that area of my life.  While I've kept up on my emails and my blog, I've virtually abandoned facebook and have far too many blogs to catch up on.  I've decided that I'm going to make a better effort to not just read, but comment on more blogs as I know how much effort goes into writing one and how nice it is to get feedback.  With facebook, I'm not so sure.  I have mixed feelings about that social networking tool.  I think it has both good and bad aspects to it and I'm not sure if the positive outweighs the negative.

While out of town, I have become extremely aware of how much time I can potentially spend on the internet.  Since I don't have an iphone (or similar), I'm at the mercy of WiFi when out of town.  At one point, we were able to piggy back off unsecured wireless internet at our condo.  However, it seems everyone had the nerve to secure their service so it's no longer accessible to me.  So, my choices are to take my laptop to a business with free WiFi, such as Starbucks or Borders, where I end up spending more money than I planned, or to use the public library's computers.  This last visit I opted for the library, where patrons are limited to a one hour time limit.  With this time limit, I found I had to prioritize my internet browsing.  It was quite an eye opener as the seemed to pass very quickly.

I'm starting back to classes on Monday - can that be possible? - so I'm going to try to continue using my internet time wisely.  Both email and my favorite blogs will be on the top of my prioritized list.

Cherie, I agree internet time goes very quickly. It's almost like tv time in that it would be beneficial to limit it with a timer or similar.

Cherie,

I agree about FB. I opened an account when it first started becoming popular. My husband didn't like it - he thought old boyfriends would creep into my life, so I shut it down. But when my mom, dad, cousins, stepkids and 3/4 of my friends were on it, I thought I would reactivate - with the promise that I would never "friend" and old flame.

I like staying connected with family who live far away, but I don't like the day-to-day minutia of hearing about someone's baby's intestinal problems, or someone's car is in the shop. And that Farmville thing drives me bonkers! So I have mixed feelings like you. I do like to link my blog to my FB account though. Have you ever tried that?

I, like you, will focus more on writing my blog and reading/commenting on other peoples' blogs who I enjoy - like yours!

I know I spend way too much time online and struggle with how to change that. I do love Facebook and the way I've met so many fascinating people and gotten to know others on a more intimate level. But there's a lot of junk, as well. I hide every game, quiz, app, etc. so at least I don't have to see all that. I'm also working on putting together a list of the people I most want to keep up with and just browse that select group regularly.

And like you, I have known for a long time that I need to schedule more time to comment on the blogs I enjoy. So here I am. :)

Fiona, I probably do need to get a timer to force myself to keep time on the internet down to a reasonable amount.

Adrienne, I haven't shut down my account but I rarely visit it anymore. I think I have too many "friends" and, like you, sometimes there's just way too much information.

Deanna, I have reconnected with some people through Facebook and find it's a good way to keep in touch with distant friends and family. But I think I need to use your suggestion and make a list of key people to check in on. Maybe I just need to hide the people I'm not really close to.
