How the Commercialized Christmas Impacts the World

As we go about our merry way during the holiday season, we rarely think about the consequences of our actions.  Although we believe we're doing good - buying gifts for family and friends - this time of year can have a huge negative impact on ourselves, those around us, even people half-way around the world.  These next few weeks I want to explore the ways in which we are actually doing damage.

Interesting.

I have to say that I have become a Christmas Humbug and recently I have been doing some questioning my reasons for feeling this way. Actually, first I looked at what I love about the season, which is being with family and friends. And when it comes down to it, I'm a Humbug because of the pressure for it to be something else, whatever it is that the holidays have morphed into. I have to say that not having cable and being bombarded with all the commercials this year is WONDERFUL! Well this is all something I need to work out for myself, but I certainly look forward to your future posts.

Shona, you are so right about commercials causing part of the stress. When our children were young, they were only allowed to watch PBS children's programs. One day before Christmas, our 3-year-old son started telling us that he wanted the "three-in-one-Fisher-Price-tournament table." It was then that I realized that he had been watching other TV stations!
